Question:
I'm 32 and started going to a dentist in January after a few years
without check ups. I ended up getting a deep cleaning becuase of gum
disease, two root canals, and one crown.
I have two teeth that are cracked and I think the dentist said it was due
to my grinding at night. I asked for a mouth guard but we never got
around to it because I said I would wait and use it when I bleach my
teeth (as a birthday gift to myself).
One of the crowns has some bleeding when I floss, is that a problem?
Also, do I need a mouthguard to protect my teeth? I bought one at K-Mart
in the sports section a few years back, but after a while my jaw would
start to lock, so I quit wearing it and my jaw is okay.
Answer:
You cannot use your occlusal guard for bleaching purposes. You need
to use two separate appliances.
Assuming the crown is properly fabricated, you should have your
dentist or hygienist review your flossing technique. After a week of
proper home care, there should be no bleeding while flossing.
If you have a grinding or clenching habit, you need an occlusal guard.
Your dentist can fabricate a proper guard for you--K-mart cannot.
Important rule: Never let your insurance company dictate to you the
dentistry you may or may not need. Insurance must be looked at as
financial assistance only, not as a credit card or a club. For
example, suppose you broke a front tooth eating and you needed a root
canal, post, and a crown--but your insurance allowance was used up and
it's only August. I think most people would find a way to restore
their smile now, rather than waiting until January. Talk to your
dentist and find a way to get your necessary dentistry completed
now--don't wait.
From what you say, I'd think a bite guard would be a good idea. The one
your dentist would make would be very different from the one you bought at
K-Mart. The dental appliance would permit freedom of movement, and you
shouldn't experience the jaw problem.
